George Alvan Bandy was born in 1951 in Ashland, Oregon.
In school he was a poor student and a frequent truant who otherwise stayed out of trouble. Not long after his graduation, he married Rhonda Fay Williams.
In November of 1976 he and Rhonda and their two young children set out for California in search of better work for George. They took a small apartment in Hayward. He grew a thick beard with a square bottom and got hired as a security guard at the huge PayLess store in San Mateo. Always in grubby dark pants and a biker’s vest, his tinted glasses in place, he mixed easily with unsuspecting customers and adopted a self-important strut that reflected how seriously he took his job of moving from aisle to aisle in hopes of catching a shoplifter.
PayLess soon decided to remove him from his role as store security guard and reassigned him in the store as a warehouseman.
The day of the PayLess triple homicide and burglary was his day off.
