Larry Weissel (on left) and Bob Grantham, lead detectives on the PayLess Murders case. Weissel's nickname among fellow detectives was “Sidemouth,” because he talked out of the side of his mouth. Those who knew him and watched him work considered him one of the best homicide investigators in California.
Bob Grantham and Larry Weissel often worked cases together. Ten years younger than Weissel, Grantham was bright, had thick hair, and he always seemed to be smiling at some secret joke. It was a slight smile that was just short of a smirk, and it caused other detectives to observe that because of that perpetual smile and an off-handed manner, Grantham was “a hard read." That was true especially in the company of Sidemouth, who was a blunt and open book. By contrast, Grantham spoke slowly and tactfully, and Weissel often interrupted him to growl, “Fffuh! Spit it out!” |
